"I’m a Black woman in my late forties, and I represent a demographic of people who struggle with being strong, but vulnerable; want to be appreciated, but not exploited; and seen as human as her non-BIPOC counterparts. Why do I have to wipe away white women's tears? Can I cry my own tears?" — Adrienne D. Jackson, Founder & Artistic Director of Create Freedom Arts Projects

SHE is about Jackson's experience as a mother, wife, educator, and community leader. Through contemporary dance, music, and poetry, the performance expresses some of the challenges and joys along the journey and learning to live in it all fully.

Create Freedom Arts Projects (CFAP) is a contemporary dance company and community of artists in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 2012 by Adrienne D. Jackson, CFAP’s mission is to inspire creativity, incite conversation, and inform the community.

CFAP provides opportunities and a safe space for novice and seasoned dance artists to develop their creative process and share it with the community. Through movement and conversation, CFAP cultivates community among dance artists and diverse audiences, allowing investigation and discussion of difficult social issues such as domestic violence, racism, and mental health.

Recent Choreographic Work

Breaking Cycles

“Breaking Cycles” is a dance film suite confronting domestic violence. I created the choreography in collaboration with the resident artists of Create Freedom Arts Projects, and filmmaker Aaron Turner. There are five videos in the playlist below.

The Talk

“The Talk” grew out of my concern for protecting my children. As a Black mother, it’s important to be an example of the richness of who they are while teaching them to not let that richness be exploited. “The Talk” shined a light on the increasingly necessary conversation taking place in homes and communities (the village) all over the country between parents of color and their children about how to navigate the world. The evening-length show was staged at the District Theatre in Indianapolis in November 2021.

MayDay

Presented during Mental Health Awareness Month in May 2022, “MayDay” explored mental illness and wellness within community. The choreographic works centered on one message: “It’s okay to ask for help. You don’t have to do this alone.”

The video is an excerpt of the performance, a piece titled “Ubuntu (through others, be.)” choreographed by Adrienne D. Jackson performed by Create Freedom Arts Projects. The evening-length show was staged at the Phoenix Cultural Centre in Indianapolis.
